Meditation-The Language of God
By, Sri Chinmoy
What is meditation? Meditation is man’s self-awakening and God’s Self-offering. When man’s self-awakening and God’s Self-offering meet together, man becomes immortal in the inner world and God becomes fulfilled in the outer world.
Meditation tells us only one thing: God is. Meditation reveals to us only one truth: ours is the vision of God.
If we feel that we are satisfied with what we have and what we are, then there is no need for us to enter into the field of meditation. The reason we enter into meditation is because we have an inner hunger. We feel that within us there is something luminous, something vast, something divine. We feel that we need this thing very badly only right now we do not have access to it. So our hunger comes from out inner aspiration.
This aspiration, our inner cry, is the secret of meditation. When a grown-up person cries, his cry is usually not sincere. But when a child cries, even if he is crying only for candy, he is very sincere. At that time, candy is the whole world for him. If we give him a hundred-dollar bill, he will not be satisfied; he cares only for candy. When a child cries, immediately his father or mother comes to help him. If we can cry from deep within for Peace, Light and Truth, and if this is the only thing that will satisfy us, then God our eternal Father and eternal Mother is bound to come and help us.
When we think that it is we who are trying to meditate, then meditation becomes complicated. But real meditation is not done by us. It is done by our inner Pilot, the Supreme, who is constantly meditating in and through us with our conscious awareness and consent. We are just the vessel. If we can make our mind vacant and tranquil, if we can make our whole existence into an empty vessel, then our inner being can invoke infinite Peace, Light and Bliss to enter into the vessel and fill it. Spirituality cannot be achieved by pulling or pushing. We cannot pull down spiritual Light by hook or by crook. Only when it comes down on its own, on the strength of our aspiration, will we be able to receive it. Otherwise, the Light will descend beyond our capacity of receptivity, and our vessel will break. It is in our conscious observation and conscious acceptance of this Light that we see the purification, transformation and illumination of our lives.
Each person’s soul has its own way of meditating. My way of meditating will not suit you, and your way of meditating will not suit me. There are many seekers whose meditation is not fruitful because they are not doing the meditation that is right for them. If you don’t have a spiritual Master who can guide you, then you have to go deep within and get your meditation from the inmost recesses of your heart. Go deep, deep within and see if you get a voice or thought or idea. Then, go deep into this voice or thought and see if it gives you a feeling of inner joy or peace, where there are no questions or problems or doubts. When you get this kind of feeling, then you can know that the voice that you have heard is the real inner voice which will help you in your spiritual life.
If you have a teacher who is a realised soul, his silet gaze will teach you how to meditate. A Master does not have to explain outwardly how to meditate or give you a specific form of meditation. Your soul will enter into his soul and learn from his soul. All real spiritual Masters teach meditation in silence.
Occasionally I give instructions outwardly to disciples who need it. But to most I don’t give individual meditations. When I accept a disciple, I concentrate on his soul and give the soul some inner meditation. I bring the soul forward and then the soul actually meditate in and through the seeker. The soul also convinces the heart and the mind to do the right thing, so that eventually the entire being – body, vital, mind, heart and soul – will do proper meditation. When I concentrate on the disciple’s soul, the disciple is bound to receive my inner instruction. But if the disciple can consciously create a pure vibration and keep a sincere attitude, then it is easier for his soul to remain at the fore and to receive everything from me.
In the ordinary life, if ten persons come to the same class in school, the teacher gives them all the same lesson. But in the case of spiritual Master, it is different. In the morning or during the day when he meditates on his disciples, the consciousness that he gives to one he will not give to another.
When I meditate on my disciples, I motivate and inspire each individual according to his capacity to receive and manifest the Light that I am giving him. Out of God’s infinite Bounty, I have the capacity to enter into each person’s consciousness and soul and see what that particular individual needs most, and how he wants to manifest the Divinity within himself. One individual’s soul may want to realise and manifest the Truth through divine Power. Another individual may want to realise God through love, devotion and surrender. So first I have to know what the soul wants; only then can I tell the person inwardly, “You follow this rule.” I may not tell him outwardly, but inwardly I say, “This is the way you have to realise and manifest the Truth.” Then the soul may take one day, ten days or three months to convince the physical mind how and why to meditate. The mind may not understand, but here the mind is not at all necessary.
