Ideal Vocation Exercise

This exercise is designed to clarify the ideal career for fulfilling your life purpose. Partner A will ask the questions and Partner B will answer. Partner B will do best to answer with the first thought that comes to mind without analyzing the content. Partner A will be most helpful not by analyzing or interpreting Partner B’s answers but simply by asking the questions with different phrasings and inflections to inspire a deeper understanding for Partner B. When Partner B has completed the process, roles are reversed, and Partner B asks the questions and partner A answers.

The point is to go beyond the first few obvious answers and get to areas that have previously been unexplored by the conscious mind. Partners sit facing each other and decide who will be partner A and ask the questions first and who will be partner B. Then Partner A asks partner B the following questions. Partner A can be creative with different phrasings. Below are some examples.

• Remember that partner B should not be looking at the questions.
• Remember to not analyze—quick question, quick answer.
• Remember to inject lots of enthusiasm into the phrasing of the questions.

2. If you had complete and total freedom, how would you make your purpose felt in the world?
3. If you had no limitations, what career or vocation would you choose to fulfill your purpose in life?
4. What would be the most exciting, joyful expression of your purpose through vocation?
5. If money were no object, what career would you choose to fulfill your purpose?
6. Through what means of expressing your purpose in the world would you feel most proud of yourself?
7. What is the most powerful way you could fulfill your deepest purpose in the world?
8. If you were guaranteed success, what would you choose to do with your life to fulfill your purpose in this world.
9. When you look back over your life as you are approaching its end, what could you have done through your vocation that would make you feel that you contributed in the most meaningful way?
10. In your wildest dreams, what would be the coolest career or vocation that you could use to fulfill your life purpose?
